Top Ten Features on Google+

This week, I want to talk about the new Social Media Network. The Search Master, Google, has launched a Facebook competitor. In my opinion, Google has done a great job. Google+ is already a success and it’s still in the Field Trial period. As of right now, the only way to get onto Google+ is by invitation.

Circles. One of my favorite features is Circles. Circles provide a way to organize all your social contacts. Adding someone to a certain Circle is almost like following someone on Twitter. On G+, the contact doesn’t have to be mutual. You can selectively publish information or posts to a particular Circle. So, if there is a group of people you don’t want to give certain information, put the information in a different Circle. When I talk to people in my Family Circle, I don’t really want my Photographers’ Network Circle to see the same post.

Stream.  The Stream is sort of like the Facebook Wall. This is where you read posts from people in your Circle and posts that you share. As I mentioned above, you can share with a particular Circle or multiple Circles if you like. But, you have to be careful who you share with. My first few times logging on, I had someone posting personal things. You have the option of making your posts Public. If you don’t want to share with everyone then don’t make it public. Also with your stream, you can chose what Circle to read from. This cuts down on a lot of noise and chatter as seen on Twitter and Facebook.

Hang Out. I think the Hang Out feature is one of the more popular features on G+. The Hang Out is Googles video chat service. You can chat with up to 9 other users. It’s almost like hanging out with your social media buddies. I can see using this for meetings or interviews. You can join others in a Hang Out right from your Stream or start your own Hang Out.

Huddle. Huddle is an interesting feature. I actually just figured it out. It’s a fast-group texting app for mobile device. You can choose to text with an individual or a group of people from your Circles. It’s a good way to keep a group connected on the go.

Photos. Google Photos is actually Picasa. On G+ photos look great because of the huge thumbnails and the lightbox display. As your photos get commented on, the number of comments is displayed in the corner of the thumbnail. The photo sharing feature of G+ is very appealing to photographer like myself. You can also view photos from people in your Circle from here.

Sparks. Here is another feature that I just discovered. Sparks is basically where you can search for things that Spark you interest. They are links to blogs, news, and other interests. You can also share your Spark with your Circle or make it public.

Notifications. The Notifications on G+ are interactive. When someone comments on my posts, I enjoy being able to reply right in the Notifications area. Nice huh… You can also +1 a comment from there. The +1 button is like the Facebook Like button.

+1 Button. The +1 is everywhere now. Much like Facebook’s Like button and Twitter’s Tweet button. Yes I have the +1 button here, so don’t forget to +1 me.

Clean. One of the biggest differences to me, in comparison to other Social Networks, is G+ is Clean. What I mean by that is there is not a whole lot of stuff everywhere. Everything seems to be very organize and well presented. Yes, I know this isn’t a feature but it’s one thing that draws me more toward G+.

Invite. This isn’t a feature either but I’m glad that I got invited early to try out the new Social Network. The Search Master Google has made a huge success in the Social Media world so far. Right now Google is still in the Field Trial stage and you can only log on if you are invited. Also you have to have a Gmail address to join. Sounds simple huh… Google+ is really nice and I think it’s here to stay. If you would like to join me and many others, leave your Gmail address in comments below and I will send out invites. Thank you for reading another Top Ten Tuesday!

What’s do you like about G+?

My Top Ten Features On 500px

500px

-The look of 500px is like no other photo sharing site I’ve seen. The images look better, because the photos are larger than I’m used to seeing. So naturally, the photographs look better. The thumbnails are larger also. Even the profile picture is larger, unlike any other site with a profile picture. When I first discovered 500px, the look attracted me right away.

-Editors’ Choice is a great idea for any place that photography is published. Published? Some people don’t believe by just posting photographs, that it’s a form of publishing. But, the idea of an Editors’ Choice, actually shows that the editors support photographer exposure. There are editors that actually pick their favorite photographs. They are then listed in Editors’ Choice. There is also a Livejournal post that comes out with all the Editors’ Choices on it. All this is geared towards getting seen. Exposure…

-Popular photographs are those that are voted on. Yes, there is a voting system on 500px. You click on the like or dislike buttons to vote. The more ‘like’ votes you get on a photo, the higher the rating on that photo. The most popular photos are put on the Popular page. This is a good place to see some great photographs.

-A Portfolio is a valuable group of photographs to a photographer. 500px actually has a place to create a professional looking portfolio. You can send a link to your portfolio or people can check out your portfolio right from your home page.

-Blogging is a great option to have. You have a Blog tab on your page. There is also a Blog page for all blog feeds on 500px. This is giving the option for even more exposure because it gives each photographer a voice.

-Inspiration is something that all photographers look for. Well, there are so many great photographers on 500px that it’s not hard to find a photograph that will inspire your work to be better. The quality of photographs that I’ve seen are amazing.

-Upcoming is another page that I pay attention to. This page is where photos are rising in popularity. I think this is very encouraging to upcoming photographers..

-Fresh is a page that has photographs that are freshly uploaded. So, if you want to find new stuff, here you go.

-Affection is kind of funny to me because I was watching an episode of Scott Kelby’s The Grid, he mentioned that photo sharing sites are for people that need a hug…lol  (not directly quoted) Well, he is right. As artists, we have to love our own work. When others like what we love, then that’s even better. Affection is a total number of like votes you get on your photos. The higher the number the better. I’m only at 37 so far. I need a hug…lol Visit my 500px and give me a hug.

-Social Media is really big for any photographer. Scott Kelby also mentioned, that the most connected photographers will be the most successful photographers. 500px has a Twitter page, Facebook page, and Livejournal. They also have social media buttons to post your photos.

I had planned to write a 500px review, but I decided to do a Top Ten Tuesday on the photo sharing site. This is my review.

If you use this site, what are your favorite features? If you don’t use it, why?

As always leave suggestions for next weeks Top Ten Tuesday.

Top Ten Blogs I Read

This week, lets look a blogs. What blogs do you spend the most time on? What news are you interested in? Well, here is my Top Ten for this Tuesday.

My first four blogs that I spend a lot of time on are all in the same category. Macworld, Tuaw, 9 to 5 Mac, and Mac Rumors all provide me with information about the machine that runs my business and keep me organized. Apple…  Apple news is always important to me. So, these four blogs keep me up to date with all of the Apple technology.

In the photography industry there are some photographers that have blogs that keep me up to date with the industry of my craft.

Digital Photography Review is my top site for gear review. The biggest reason that I visit this site is to do research. I’ve been using this site since I began to get serious about photography. I’ve read many reviews here. They were all detailed and got me the information I needed.

Photography Bay is another blog that I enjoy because of the way it’s geared toward the photography industry. This blog is sort of new to me but I really like the information that I find here.

Pixelated Image is a very inspirational blog by David duChemin. I have read some Craft&Vision ebooks by him. Craft&Vision is a series of educational ebooks by David. Very inspirational.

Strobist… I have learned so much from this blog about lighting. David Hobby really explains off camera lighting here on this blog. He also posts about the photography industry and things that he deals with in his photography world. Thanks David!

Chase Jarvis’ blog is always full of great content. Chase is always encouraging photographers like me to concentrate on making my craft better. Also his blog always has some fun stuff on it. He has a video of a video camera mounted on fireworks, on his latest post. Check it out…

AEparker Photography is my blog of course. Yes, I’ve included this one because I spend a lot of time here posting and writing. I am inspired by other bloggers to become a better writer. This will compliment my photography because I will always be able to write about my work. Thank you all for stopping by!

Remember share your top blog sites below. And as always, any suggestions on next weeks Top Ten Tuesday should be left below.

And I always leave you with a recent photo above. Thank you all that visit my blog!

My Top Ten Favorite Photographers

This weeks Top Ten is a list of photographers that have inspired me in some way. In my opinion I have come a long way in craft as a photographer. I owe a lot of thanks to these guys.

  • Bryan Peterson was one of the first photographers that I read about. I was inspired by his image alone. When I first got into photography, I didn’t really have a good idea what a great photo was supposed to look like. When I saw his work, I was amazed at the sharpness. I was also stunned by the color he used. His book Understanding Exposure was a big teacher to me. I had no clue how to come up with the correct exposure. I didn’t even know that a camera had a light meter inside. This informative book really explain many things to me. I quickly became able to take a photo with correct exposure every time.
  • David Hobby is also a light wizard. I think a lot of my lighting inspiration has come from watching David Hobby and Joe McNally. I have learned a lot on David’s Strobist Blog. He also talks about being a publisher. Anyone that posts a blog is technically a publisher. The idea of being a publisher changes so much in the world of media.
  • Chase Jarvis is known for The Best Camera iPhone app. He inspires creativity. The best camera is the one you have with you.
  • Jeremy Cowart is an Entertainment/Music/Celebrity Photographer and the Founder of Help-Portrait. Last year I participated in Help-Portrait and I was inspired to be involve each year.
  • Ansel Adams is one of my favorite because of his use of black and white. He was known for photographing Yosemite National Park. His black and whites live and inspire many photographers like myself. I’m also inspired by his quotes. My favorite is “You don’t take a photograph, you make it”.
  • Zack Arias talks about “One Light”. He has made me understand that I don’t have to have a lot of expensive equipment to create photographs. Learn to use the equipment that you have before spending money to buy something that you will have to learn to use. I hope that makes sense. I’m not quoting him directly but this is how I understood it.
  • Joe Abejon is a local photographer here in Virginia Beach. He is sort of a mentor to me. We met when I was looking for a studio to rent. I met him at his studio and I loved it. Joe coaches me with my studio lighting. Joe and Ana (Joe’s wife) has been a great inspiration on my lighting. The cool thing is I get to actually talk to Joe and Ana, and they are always willing to help me. When I first started shooting, a lot of photographers weren’t willing to help an aspiring artist like myself. Thanks Joe and Ana Abejon!
  • Algernon Parker is me, AEparker. How have I inspired myself, you may ask? I inspire myself with my effort. The more I create, the more I want to create. You can say that I’m a self-motivated person. And as an artist you have to love your own work. Loving your own work will set you apart for the flooding photography industry. I love my own work!

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks Top Ten Tuesday. Please feel free to add or comment about your favorite photographer below. Who is your favorite photographer?

How I Use Twitter

Two Ways I use Twitter

Twitter is a messaging and microblogging web service. Twitter is used in many different ways. This is how I use it.

The First Way…
When I post a blog on my website I post it to twitter. Twitter terminology, I tweet it. I tweet a short message about it and the link to the post on my blog. This gets the attention of my Twitter followers and anyone that sees or searches Twitter for a certain topic. Keywords determine how you will be found by people that don’t follow you on Twitter Search. This gets the attention of many people. I also use the Twitter app on Facebook. So, what ever I Tweet is posted to my Facebook status. I periodically remind the people that follow me about my blog post using Twitter.

The Second Way…
I also use Twitter daily to post inspirational quotes. I post my quote of the day (#QuoteoftheDay) based on things that I’m dealing with or funny stuff that make me smile. This way of using Twitter lets my followers know of a quote that inspired me for the day. By posting daily, I’m building a presence on Twitter, Facebook, the Internet.

Top Ten Photography Tips

Top Ten Tuesday is here. Today I want to share my Top Ten Tips… These are at the top of my list of things that should help other photographers. If it doesn’t help others, I still would like to share.

  • Get to know your camera. You should always get to know your camera. Know everything that it is capable of doing. Know a little about the brand and line of camera equipment. There is nothing like getting in front of someone and appearing clueless with a high dollar camera in your hands. A camera is a photographer’s tool. Just like a carpenter, if you can’t use a hammer, then your craft isn’t quite right.
  • Pay close attention to the background. One of the big things that I  had to learn was be aware of what is in your photo. The background is a very important part of the photo. A good background can make or break a photo. When there are distracting objects in the background, it take away from the subject.
  • Shoot your kids. The most important thing to remember when photographing kids…  Get on their level. Grown ups are always standing over a child. Getting at their level makes a photo look as if your are there with them, not standing over them which we see all the time. Kids are great practice because if they are in there environment, they become very easy to shoot. Most of all they make great memories.
  • Use fill flash outdoors. Available light is great. I use available light a lot. I use it when shooting the kids at the park because they move around too fast to set up lighting. But…  When you are set up, use a fill light. A fill light can compliment available lighting very well. A fill light will open up unwanted shadows and make eyes pop. If your subject is wearing a hat, fill light is perfect for getting rid of the shadow over their eyes.
  • Composition is key. Composition can also make or break a photo. One of the most important rules I learned was The Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds is a great guideline for any photo. Basically it keep the subject from being in the middle of the frame. If you draw imaginary lines in your viewfinder in a ‘TicTacToe’ pattern, those lines represent the rule. Your subject should be as close to or on one of the intersecting lines of the ‘TicTacToe’ pattern. When you can accomplish that without thinking about it then you have mastered this rule. Your eyes should see and you should think in The Rule of Thirds.
  • Buy prints for yourself. A print is a product of photography. In these digital days, most of us see photos online. I must say that there is no greater satisfaction than seeing your work in print. There is something about being able to touch what you have created. Your touchable creativity will make a difference!
  • Take your camera with you. I have missed countless shots because I didn’t have my camera. I actually believe that every photographer should have a camera ready, whether it’s a DSLR, point and shoot, iPhone camera, or Android camera. Just don’t leave your tools at home.
  • Use flash indoors. Using flash indoors can be very creative. Using a combination of available light and multiple flash can make for a dramatic capture. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your equipment.
  • Turn off the lights. Light is a parent of photography. But when you turn the lights off and add what you want to a photo, the result is controlled lighting. I use this to create dramatic portraits. I usually turn off the lights. To create more drama, I raise my shutter speed or close my aperture to the point darkness. Then I add a dash of light to my subject to make a dramatic feel.
  • Always have fun. When I started shooting, it was fun. It has always been fun. To me, creating is fun. Creating meaningful moments is what I enjoy. Continue to shoot and continue to have fun while shooting! If I’m not shooting, I’m not having fun!

As always, feel free to add your own tips to this top ten. These are just things that I have pickup along my journey as a photographer. Photography is a continuous learning experience. I feel that I’m always learning and I feel that I learn from others constantly. What tips can you share here on Top Ten Tuesday? Always Share On Top Ten Tuesdays!

Top Ten iPad Apps

AEparker’s Top Ten iPad apps

This is the first of many Top Ten Tuesdays. Every Tuesday I will list my top ten in an interesting subject or maybe something that is suggested by you, the reader.

Today I want to list my top ten apps for iPad. I use my iPad very faithfully. It’s become a big part of my daily routine. I use it for business, I use it for fun and, I also use it when I’m on the run… HA!

  • CNN app helps me keep up with a lot of current events. If you are the type that likes to keep up with the news and your iPad is always near, then this is it. This app automatically notifies me when there is breaking news. There breaking news videos and live stream news. The layout is very easy to use. Keep up with what’s going on with this app.
  • HootSuite for iPad is a great social media tool. As much as I stay updated on my social media, I needed something like this. I’ve used other apps for this but they don’t quite stand up to HootSuite for iPad. I’m able to post to multiple social media site that I use. Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin are updated with HootSuite. One of my favorite features is the ability to make future posts. You can schedule a post for tomorrow if you know you will be busy.
  • Zinio for iPad is a magazine app. I love my magazines, so it’s obvious that I would love this app. I have converted all of my paper magazine subscriptions to digital subscription. If you are a magazine person, this is the app for you.
  • Square is a must have for a small business. Square sends you a free card-swiper that connects to your iPad and works great. The great thing is there is No Monthly Fees or Contracts. There is only 2.75% per swipe. So, even if your buddy owes you money, the excuse that he only has his check card on him will not work.
  • Zite for iPad is a personalized magazine app that gets smarter as you use it. What it does is, as you read the different blogs from the different topics, it knows that you like what you read because of what you read the most. I keep up with a lot of photography blogs with this app. It will always load blogs that you read the most. I was skeptical when I first got this app but now I love it.
  • Flipboard is a personalized social magazine. This app also is personalized but you do the work. It keeps up with your blogs as well as your social media. Read Twitter and Facebook posts here. Flipboard was app of the year last you and rightly so. I use it mostly to keep track of different blogs that I read.
  • Evernote has to be one of my favorites. If you are not familiar with Evernote, I highly recommend you looking into it. Evernote is an app that allows me to take notes and save them. The cool thing is I can find these notes on most any device I own. I can even go to my iMac and finish up a blog post that I may have been writing on my iPad. This app also allows you to take pictures and record sound notes. With this note, I will never forget anything that I take note of. It’s like my second brain.
  • Easy Release is an app that I use to compose model releases for photo sessions. This app keep my business more paperless. I can email a copy of the release to my client, after it is signed by the client, a witness and myself.
  • Kindle for iPad is another app that helps me stay paperless. I like being able to carry many books along with me on the go. I can read anywhere. I also use iBooks but the books that I am currently reading is on my Kindle app. This app syncs bookmarks, highlights, and furthest page read to all of my devices. Reading is very convenient now.
  • 2Do for iPad may be my favorite app. It is a to-do app that syncs with Apple’s MobileMe, which will soon be the iCloud. Everything I need to do can be entered in this app and I can pull it up on my iCloud apps, like iCal. You can also add multiple calendars, which really comes in handy when managing a busy life. Push notification make this app even more usable because it tells you when something is over due.

Well, this is my top ten iPad apps.

There will be more post like this one on every Tuesday. Feel free to add your favorite in the comments below. Also, you can leave suggestions of what Top Ten you want to hear about next week. I hope you have enjoyed reading this post and will look forward to next Top Ten Tuesday! Thank you for stopping by!
